As AMC’s Mad Men concluded its seven-season run recently, the effects of cigarette smoking were taking their toll on Betty Draper Francis, ex-wife of ad man Don Draper.  For many viewers, Betty’s late-stage lung cancer diagnosis was the series’ unhappiest ending.
Smoking was pervasive in the series, just as it had been in the decade of the Sixties. Portrayed by actress January Jones, the blonde and beautiful Betty made smoking look stylish – and cigarettes made advertising agencies rich. Mad Men had been criticized for glamorizing smoking, but Betty’s diagnosis hammered home the real-world consequences.
We’ve learned a lot since the 1960s about smoking – and about the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
Early detection is critical! Now, patients at high risk for lung cancer can get an annual lung CT scan if they meet the following guidelines:
  • Age 55-77 years
  • Tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (to translate your smoking history into pack-years, multiply the number of cigarette packs you have smoked per day by the number of years you have smoked)
  • Are a current smoker or a former smoker who has quit smoking within the past 15 years
  • NO signs or symptoms of lung cancer
The order from your physician must state:
  • Written order for LDCT Lung Screening (low dose CT)
  • ICD 9 code = V15.82 Tobacco use
Lung screening studies are performed at SJRA’s West Deptford, Haddonfield, and Route 73 (Voorhees) offices. All SJRA scans are performed with the lowest radiation dose possible for diagnostic quality.
This study is not covered by all insurance plans at this time. Patients may call SJRA for more information regarding coverage and payment options.
Call 1-888-909-SJRA to schedule an appointment or book online at sjra.com.  If booking online, please make sure you select the West Deptford, Haddonfield or Route 73 office.
