This past November, several of our Breast Imaging Specialists answered an invitation from the Radiological Society of North America to present to their radiology colleagues from around the world and many more who were viewing online. Representing SJRA were Catherine Piccoli, M.D., F.A.C.R., Co-Chair of SJRA’s Women’s Breast Imaging Department (graduate of Harvard Medical School); Nikki S. Ariaratnam, M.D., D.A.B.R. (graduate of Brown Medical School); and Anne Hae Mee King, D.O., D.A.B.R. (graduate of UMDNJ).

Dr. Piccoli taught a course on ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. At SJRA, we perform breast biopsies using ultrasound, 2D mammography, 3D mammography (tomosynthesis-guided biopsy), and MRI. Each modality provides us with different information about the breast tissue and we may use one or all to help us make a diagnosis. Dr. Piccoli is internationally known and respected among her colleagues, so it’s no surprise she presented breast biopsy skills to radiologists from around the world.

Dr. Ariaratnam presented a paper on tomosynthesis-guided biopsy to diagnose cancers that cannot be seen using conventional 2D mammograms or ultrasound.  Lecturing to a group of 400 radiologists (and more viewing online), Dr. Ariaratnam discussed the results of her analysis of 1,116 breast biopsies. The goal of the analysis was to evaluate the types of cancer and high-risk lesions found with biopsies guided by tomosynthesis (3D mammography).

“Our analysis found that over half of the tomosynthesis-detected abnormalities we biopsied required a surgeon’s attention; also, about one quarter of the biopsies we performed found cancers that would not have been detected without the use of tomosynthesis and tomosynthesis-guided biopsy,” said Dr. Ariaratnam.

An additional benefit of tomosynthesis-guided biopsy, as reported by Dr. Ariaratnam, is a reduction in the time to perform the procedure.
