POSITION:                Certified Coder

LOCATION:               Voorhees Billing Department

HOURS:                    Monday-Friday: 9:00 am-5:30 pm


  • Audits records to ensure proper submission of services prior to billing on pre-determined selected charges using computer assisted coding software system
  • Supplies correct ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes on all diagnoses provided.
  • Supplies correct CPT/HCPCS code on all procedures and services performed
  • Advise doctors and staff of coding errors.
  • Update ICD-10, CPT and RIS codes as needed to determine the final diagnoses and procedures stated by the physician or other health care providers are valid and complete.
  • Assist billing staff with coding issues or questions.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Coding certifications – Radiology, AAPC and/or CPC
  • Two (2) plus years of coding experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and billing process
  • Must be fully computer proficient with spreadsheet skills
  • Excellent communication skills

Exemption Status:  Non-Exempt

SUMMARY – This position assists the radiologists and/or staff in the appropriate ICD-10 and CPT coding of procedures.


  • Analyze, code and post from Optum CAC on a daily basis
  • Advise radiologists and/or staff of coding errors
  • Responsible for all inquiries in regard to coding issues
  • Update ICD-10, CPT and RIS codes as needed after reviewing with management
  • Update WebDocs ICD-10 Crosswalk, as needed
  • Post charges and payments as needed
  • Assist billing staff with any coding issues and/or questions
  • Communicate with provider representatives at insurance carriers and collection agencies
  • Document employee coding errors; recommend further training and education
  • Ensure phone calls are answered
  • Must maintain confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA and Corporate Compliance regulations
  • All other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES – This position has no supervisory responsibilities


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current coding certification

Training and Experience

  • Two or more year experience in medical billing preferred
  • Active certification in coding; Radiology, AAPC and/or CPC

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of all functions of billing processes, including but not limited to knowledge of medical terminology, reimbursement analysis, experience with appeals process, credit balance, billing regulations, etc.
  • Proficient with computer spreadsheets
  • Ability to communicate
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written
  • Proficient with use of business machines (i.e. fax, copier, adding machines, etc)

Physical Demands of the Position – This position requires sitting for 80% of scheduled shift as well as standing, walking and lifting of boxes and folders (not over 25 pounds). There is also continuous use of a computer, computer keyboard and computer mouse throughout the scheduled shift.

Working Conditions – The position is in an indoor office setting in close proximity to coworkers.
