BEFORE STOPPING ANY MEDICATION PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN

If you are allergic to eggs you will be unable to have this test performed.
Do NOT have anything to eat or drink 6 hours before you examination. The test will take approximately 4 ½ hours. Stop taking any of the following medications for 2 days prior to your test:

  • Prokinetic agents or Meds that delay gastric emptying
  • Metoclopramide (aka Maxolon, Reglan)
  • Tegaserod (aka Zelnorm)
  • Domperidone (aka Motilium, Motinorm and Costi)
  • Opiates (i.e. morphine, codeine, oxycodone, Valium)
  • Antispasmodics (i.e. Bentyl, Dicyclomine, Dibent, Di-Spaz, Baclofen, Dantrolene, Dilomine)
  • Metoclopramide
  • Cisapride
  • Domperidone
  • Ranitidine
  • Nizatidine
  • Neostigmine

Do NOT have anything to eat or drink 4 hours before your examination. Stop taking any pain medications (prescription narcotic) for 12 hours prior to the study.  This test may take up to 4 hours.

Do NOT have anything to eat of drink 4 hours before your examination.

No Prep

1 hour prior to the procedure you must drink 16 oz of water. You may empty your bladder.

Do NOT eat or drink 4 hours prior to the study. If you are a diabetic you may have a light breakfast, such as juice, toast or cereal with milk. Do not have any caffeine or caffeine containing products including caffeine free coffee or tea, chocolate, mountain dew and cola’s for 48 hours prior to the test. Please wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. This test may take up to 4 hours to complete.

Please consult with your doctor if you have any breathing disorders (asthma, emphysema, wheezing) or allergies to dipyridamole (persantine, aminophylline, yellow dye)

Do NOT have anything to eat or drink 1 hour prior to the initial appointment.

The following medications and foods may affect your results, because of this it is recommended that you stop taking these medications for the length of time specified:

Radiographic contrast / Myelographic contrast – 6 weeks

Thyroid medications:

  • Thyroid hormone (Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothyroxine) – 6 weeks
  • Amour thyroid – 4 weeks
  • Cytomel – 2 weeks

Anti-Thyroids (PTU propylthiuracil,Tapazole, Perchlorate) – 5 to 7 days

Topical iodine compounds – 4 weeks

Oral Iodides & medication containing iodine (all) – 4 weeks

  • Lugol’s solution
  • Potassium iodide
  • Kelp
  • Anti-parasitic drugs-iodochlorhydroquin
  • Anti-arrhythmic-amiodarone hydrochloride

Multi-vitamins only / Fish oil supplements – 1 week

Other Medications – 1 week

  • Antihistamines
  • Cough & cold medications
  • Salicylates-large doses
  • Butazolidin
  • Acth & corticosteroids
  • Sulfonamides
  • Mercurials

Seafood (any type) – 3 to 5 days
