What is a CAT scan?
CAT
scan, or CT scan, stands for Computerized Axial Tomography. This testing system
uses computers and X-rays to generate images of the human body in cross-section.
For example, instead of viewing a loaf of bread from the outside as we normally
do, a CAT scan would be able to see slices of the loaf while leaving the loaf
whole.
CAT scans are used to obtain information about the head, lungs, liver, gallbladder,
pancreas, spine, kidneys, pelvis, and joints, as well as other organ systems.
This information is helpful in detecting evidence of trauma, blood clots, tumors
and abscesses as well as other problems.
Also, three-dimensional images of certain selected parts of the body can be
constructed, such as the anklebones and other joints. Sometimes, contrast material
is used to help distinguish between different tissues. The ability to see individual
structures in the body allows the specialists at SJRA to identify abnormalities
in various human organs.
THE FASTEST CT SCANNER IN THE WORLD
All scanners at SJRA are of the multidetector variety, which is the newer, more advanced technology. We are proud be one of the first ten sites in the United States offering the Siemens Definition, the world’s only dual source CT scanner, optimized for cardiac imaging. The Definition is a revolutionary concept in CT, with cardiac imaging abilities standard 64-slice scanners cannot equal. The Definition allows coronary CTA on virtually anyone, independent of heart rate, with temporal resolution half that of current 64-slice scanners. This allows you to obtain the best images of your coronary arteries without the need for premedication to slow the heart. For further information of the Definition please visit:

What preparation do I need for my CAT scan?
You may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the examination.
Contrast material may be given by mouth, sometimes beginning the night before.
In other instances, intravenous contrast is given at the time of the examination
so that structures can be better identified. A history of contrast (e.g. iodine)
allergy should be reported to our staff prior to the procedure.

What is a CAT scan like?
A CAT scan is painless. The procedure may take anywhere from less than 10 seconds
to a minute or two. You will be placed on a table which enters a large machine
with a round opening. At various times, you may be asked to hold your breath.
You also will be asked to remain motionless at various times for brief periods
when images are being acquired.
