MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI procedures are available at our Greentree (Marlton), Voorhees and Turnersville offices.

FOR APPOINTMENTS, PLEASE CALL 1-888-909-SJRA (7572).

What is MRI?
MRI is the common name for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This equipment is used to look inside the body without using X-rays. Under controlled circumstances, an extremely powerful magnetic field and radio frequency energy are used to create computer-assisted images of the body. These images are then interpreted by SJRA specialists trained in neuroradiology, body imaging and orthopedic radiology.

Our newest MR magnet is the Siemens 3.0 Tesla Trio, a latest generation ultra high field system, designed to optimize evaluation of smaller and deeper structures. This cutting edge magnet brings to the Delaware Valley the latest in advanced MR capabilities.

SJRA equipment is state-of-the-science
SJRA offers the most advanced equipment in the region. As noted, we offer the advanced Siemens Trio, operating at ultra high field 3.0 T. We have two Siemens high field strength (1.5T) scanners, and the high field open bore Espree. In addition, we have three GE high field systems, including a cardiac MR system, the TwinSpeed. We also have a Hitachi open system for the severely claustrophobic or weight limited patient. All of our magnets are continually upgraded to ensure state-of-the-art technology. Our array of scanners allows us to optimally evaluate any clinical problem with the best technology.

SJRA is proud to be one of the very few facilities in the world to be chosen as a Beta or demonstration site by Siemens Medical Systems. We host physicians and scientists from around the world in our centers. The confidence shown in us by Siemens is a result of our commitment to the latest equipment medical science has to offer, made accessible to our patients in a warm, friendly and private environment.

ULTRA HIGH FIELD MRI

Our newest scanner, the Trio from Siemens Medical Systems, combines the advantages of ultra high field scanning at 3.0T with Siemens revolutionary TIM (Total Imaging Matrix) technology. This allows whole body use of this advanced technology which was previously limited to neurological applications. With the Trio, SJRA physicians can take imaging to another level of resolution, allowing evaluation of problems previously limited by available technology.

New Open Bore MRI
Our new open bore MRI accommodates all size patients and eliminates anxiety and claustrophobia. For virtually all exams, your feet go in first and your head remains outside. You can always see the examination room and talk whenever you wish throughout the short scan time. When a head first exam is necessary, there is plenty of elbowroom and at least 12 inches above your face. The extra large open bore design is flared to give you a wide-open view and constant eye contact with our staff. During the scan, you can even hold the hand of a family member to provide assurance and comfort. In some exams, special ultra lightweight coils will be placed over a part of your body. They weight less than a winter sweater. No repositioning of the body is ever necessary and most important of all, the power is three times greater than the conventional Open MRI.

What kind of preparation do I need for an MRI?
Preparation for most MRI exams is minimal. You may be asked not to eat or drink before the exam depending upon the body area to be examined. Please wear little or no jewelry. Watches, coins and any other metallic objects will be removed before you enter the scanner. Most importantly, you must inform the staff of any metal in your body such as pacemakers, heart valves, aneurysm clips, metal fragments in your eyes, or other sources of metal. This will be reviewed in detail when you schedule your exam.

What can I expect during an MRI examination?
During the exam you will lie on a cushioned table projecting into the scanner. The body area to be examined will be placed on a "coil," a special type of MR antenna designed to capture the images we are generating. An intercom system allows you to speak to the technologist at all times. SJRA is pleased to offer, on our high field systems, specialized audio systems to keep you occupied during the procedure. Most exams require only 15 to 30 minutes of actual scan time. All you have to do is lie back, relax and enjoy our audio systems while our experienced technologists perform your exam.

What if I'm a bit heavy or claustrophobic?
SJRA offers two options. Our short bore field system allows many claustrophobic patients the ability to be scanned on a high field system. For the severely claustrophobic we offer our open system. Weight limits vary from one scanner to another, but the open system can accommodate most patients.
