3D Mammography Benefit Proven in Large Clinical Study
A groundbreaking study from the Oslo University Hospital Ullevaal showed a major benefit to adding 3D Mammography (tomosynthesis) to 2D digital mammograms. The study looked at 12,631 screening mammograms. The benefit was twofold for patients : a 40% increase in invasive cancer detection and a 15% reduction in false positive mammograms (the need for additional tests). The authors found an increase in cancer detection in all types of breast tissue, dense and fatty. Importantly, the study did not find an increase in the detection of in-situ lesions which have been criticized as a cause of over diagnosis. Unlike most other proposed breast cancer screening technologies, the addition of tomosynthesis resulted in improved cancer detection and simultaneously fewer false positives.
SJRA has the only tomosynthesis unit in the South Jersey area.
