Can You Get An MRI Scan With A Pacemaker?

Can You Get An MRI Scan With A Pacemaker?
December 27, 2022MRI Chest

In the United States, around three million people have implantable pacemakers for various medical conditions. A large percentage of these three million people will have to go for routine diagnostic imaging studies including MRI scans. According to the American College of Radiology, research studies show that individuals with implantable pacemakers can undergo an MRI scan if the right equipment is used. When searching for MRI scans near me, it is important to understand the protocols available for patients with pacemakers.

How Does An MRI Scan Affect A Pacemaker?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans involve using magnetic fields and radio waves to capture accurate depictions of the human body. In the past, the concern was that the magnetic fields could disrupt the function of a patient’s pacemaker. As more advancements in MRI imaging occurred, MRI compatible pacemakers and pacemaker compatible MRI equipment was developed.

Today, MRI scans are still not the first imaging study of choice for patients with pacemakers. Fortunately, some outpatient imaging centers offer the protocols and sequences needed to safely conduct an MRI scan on a patient with a pacemaker.

What Happens During An MRI Scan?

During an MRI scan, you will be asked to lay down on a bed that will slide into the machine. An MRI scan can take anywhere from 15 – 90 minutes depending on what part of your body is being studied. Prior to your appointment, you may be asked to practice some form of fasting. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t contain any metal accessories such as zippers, buttons, or jewelry. For patients with pacemakers, a cardiologist and pacemaker technician will be present to ensure the imaging study goes smoothly.

Where Can I Go To Get An MRI Scan With A Pacemaker?

South Jersey Radiology Associates has specialty protocols and sequences to accommodate patients with pacemakers. Certain traditional pacemaker devices don’t offer MRI compatibility, so it is important that our MRI imaging technology allows patients with pacemakers get the imaging they need.
