SJRA’s 3T MRI Provides Clarity Where PSA Screening Falls Short
By William F. Muhr, Jr., M.D., D.A.B.R., CEO of South Jersey Radiology
From Arnie Palmer to Frank Zappa – yes, from A to Z – the list of famous men who’ve battled prostate cancer is lengthy. This isn’t surprising; for men, prostate cancer is the most frequent non-skin cancer diagnosis and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality.
The good news is that many prostate tumors are not life threatening and most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, nearly 3 million men in the United States have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point and are still alive today.
Historically, prostate cancer screening has relied on a test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in a patient’s blood. The value of PSA screening has been hotly debated because PSA screening brings its own potential harms, including false-positives (diagnosis of prostate cancer when no cancer is present) and over-treatment. An overly aggressive treatment plan for a non-life threatening prostate tumor subjects the patient to treatment risks that include incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
A revolutionary imaging tool – available in South Jersey only at SJRA –offers much-needed clarity to the prostate cancer picture. SJRA’s 3T MRI, the Skrya, is the tool of choice for evaluating the prostate gland in men with an elevated PSA and for staging prostate cancers.
The Skyra provides our specially trained radiologists with detailed images to accurately determine the location and extent of prostate cancer. Armed with this level of diagnostic clarity, your physician can provide a treatment plan that is customized for you. And for patients who have had prior negative biopsy results but are at risk for developing cancer, 3T MRI allows us to monitor prostate changes without subjecting you to repeated biopsies.
